The Circumstance of Pomp is a thought-provoking exploration of the often overlooked emotional experiences of dogs in competitive environments, particularly within the spectacle of dog shows. The contrast between the lavish care and grooming they receive and the underlying pressure to meet rigid standards of physical perfection reveals a more complicated reality.
By presenting what I feel is the dog’s perspective, I bring attention to the less-celebrated side of this glamorous and public event. Considering what these dogs might feel—perhaps experiencing a sense of detachment, discomfort, or despondency—is a powerful commentary, and my narrative challenges the mainstream idea that animals in these shows are simply enjoying the attention they receive.
